Too Much thickness alter problem can (I think) interchangably be used with too much distortion problem. So I'd personally recommend switching for the equal strong features, or maybe improve the thickness in the shell elements so which they become significantly rigid and therefore less vulnerable to too much thickness change. https://a-solution.info/
